5 ways to support World Environment Day
“Restoring our planet: our shared responsibility” is the slogan for World Environment Day 2023.
Every 5 June we use World Environment Day to reflect on the importance of protecting our natural environment and promoting sustainability in all our actions.
This year, under the slogan “Restoring our planet: our shared responsibility”, World Environment Day seeks to focus efforts on restoring damaged ecosystems and conserving biodiversity, both of which play a key role in reversing environmental degradation and climate change.
Ecosystem restoration entails the recovery of degraded areas, the protection of natural habitats and the sustainable management of natural resources, through actions such as:
- Reforestation
- Wetland conservation
- Rehabilitation of coastal areas
- Reclamation of degraded land
- Promotion of sustainable agricultural practices
And ecosystem restoration not only benefits nature; it also benefits human communities. A healthy ecosystem can provide a clean water supply, protection against natural disasters and climate change mitigation.
And to top it all off, ecosystem restoration can also generate economic opportunities and improve your quality of life.
That is why this year’s World Environment Day calls on individuals, governments, businesses and civil society organisations to take concrete action to restore and protect ecosystems.
How can you do your part? Here are 5 ideas:
- Participate in tree planting or reforestation projects.
- Consume less (water, electricity...).
- Support organisations engaged in the conservation of natural areas.
- Encourage children (and adults) to learn more about the environment.
- Demand robust environmental policies from your political representatives.
