5 superhero capes for World Nature Protection Day
Here are 5 ideas to actively contribute to World Nature Protection Day.
Every 18 October, since 1972, World Nature Protection Day has been celebrated globally, with the aim of raising awareness of the need to preserve and protect our natural environment.
Creating a more sustainable world – the main goal of the United Nations 2030 Agenda – means that countries must find ways to develop without harming nature, by harnessing (rather than depleting) the renewable resources it provides.
But what can we as ordinary people do to keep our planet clean and healthy?
At Tenerife ON we are committed to providing tips and advice to help you enjoy the island’s nature respectfully, because we know that if you fall in love (as we do) with our natural areas, our fauna, our flora, our land... wanting to protect it is just the next natural step.
And how to protect our precious and cherished nature once you have fallen in love with it?
Here are 5 ideas:
- Protect biodiversity.A good starting point would be to visit the La Tahonilla Environmental Centre to see for yourself the great conservation work they do and, if you wish, take part in official reforestation and habitat restoration activities.
- Reduce your ecological footprint. Use public transport or your bicycle, consume consciously and reuse everything you can, avoiding waste. Choose sustainable and recyclable products if you can.
- Save natural resources. Use water and energy efficiently. Switch off lights when they are not needed, use energy-efficient appliances and adopt water-saving habits.
- Spread the word on green issues. Participate in educational programmes and share information like this about the importance of protecting nature to promote environmental awareness in your community.
- Participate in clean-up initiatives. Join beach and countryside clean-ups. And bear in mind that the first step to keeping our environments free of litter and pollution is to lead by example: never dispose of litter, either in the countryside or in your city.
On World Nature Protection Day, remember that we are all part of this ecosystem and have a responsibility to care for it. Your daily actions, however small they may seem, all do their bit for the conservation of the planet.
At Tenerife ON we promise to do our part to protect nature at your side.
