World Wildlife Day has its own story to tell
Do you know why we celebrate World Wildlife Day on 3 March?
Although the United Nations General Assembly declared 3 March as World Wildlife Day in 2013, we have to go back a long way to understand why they chose this day.
This date specifically commemorates the anniversary of the signing of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in 1973, a crucial instrument in the fight against the international trade of endangered species.
This means that more than 50 years ago, on a day like this, humanity agreed to protect the biodiversity of our planet. A biodiversity that we now know is vital, not only for the survival of all animal and plant species on Earth, but also for our own survival.
This year’s theme is “Connecting People and Planet: Exploring Digital Innovation in Wildlife Conservation”. We recommend you visit the UN’s dedicated World Wildlife Day website to understand how technology and digital innovation affect biodiversity.
And Tenerife ON is, of course, supporting this event with the aim of promoting respect and conservation of wildlife on our island and an understanding of what this means for the lives of all of us who live and enjoy it.
If you want to see the conservation plans and the island biodiversity strategy that are currently being implemented by the Tenerife Island Council, you can view the details of each initiative on the biodiversity portal.
Join in the celebration of World Wildlife Day and do your bit to protect our natural areas, which are so unique in the world.
