At Tenerife ON you can find a complete guide to trail signage on our island, to make your hiking trips easier and safer.
The European Ramblers Association (ERA) divides trails into three main categories, each with a specific colour code to make it easier for you to find your way around:
- Long-distance trail (GR®): marked in white and red, these trails are over 50 kilometres, ideal if you are looking for multi-day hikes.
- Short-distance trail (PR®): marked in white and yellow, these are ideal for a single day’s hike, as they are less than 50 kilometres long.
- Local trail (SL®): marked in white and green, these trails are less than 10 kilometres in length.
And to help guide you on your way, you can follow different types of signs depending on where they are located:
- Horizontal signs: from waymarkings painted on the rocks to plaques and wooden posts along the path that will guide you along the route.
- Vertical signs: posts or beacons giving clear directions and remaining distance.
- Information panels: strategically placed at the start, end and intersections of trails, these provide details such as trail length, elevation gain, difficulty and estimated walking time.
- Other elements: orientation tables and interpretation panels to help you understand and appreciate the landscape that surrounds you.
Explore all these signs in depth in our complete guide to trail signage and prepare to experience Tenerife’s nature at your own pace.
