Description
A well-defined footpath that runs the length of the coastline of Malpaís de Güímar, linking up Socorro and Puertito de Güímar, which lie at either end of this natural area.
The arid landscape was shaped by the eruption of the Montaña Grande volcano some 10,000 years ago, which produced blocky malpaís and ropy lava fields, lava tubes and jameos (openings in lava tubes).
This Special Nature Reserve is of great ecological importance due to the presence of the thickets of cardón or Canary Island spurge (Euphorbia canariensis) and tabaiba (Euphorbia balsamifera, Euphorbia lamarckii) that dominate the area. In addition, plant species found on the coastal strip through which Camino de la Mar runs include lechuga de mar (Astydamia latifolia), uva de mar (Tetraena fontanesii) and siempreviva de mar (Limonium pectinatum). You can also spot various species of birds feeding in the pools formed by the lava flows, such as plovers, Eurasian whimbrels, little egrets, grey herons, sparrowhawks and yellow-legged gulls.
This trail transports you back in time to the past of this reserve, revealing the traces of its former inhabitants, such as the old salt pans, places for drying out ice plant (Mesembryanthemum crystallinum), some remains of pottery and even shell middens.
You can learn more about these fascinating features and the species of the area along the way, as the trail is dotted with information panels.
