World Nature Protection Day: A Call to Action
Every 18 October, the planet comes together to celebrate World Nature Protection Day.
Since 1972, this day has sought to remind us of the urgency of preserving the beauty and vitality of our natural environment. This special occasion is a time to reflect on our relationship with nature and to think about how we can play a part in protecting it.
In Tenerife, we are aware of the immense natural wealth that surrounds us. From the lush forests of Teno to the volcanic plains of Mount Teide, every corner of our island is home to unique ecosystems that deserve to be protected. This day is the perfect excuse to act, not only with symbolic gestures, but with real changes in our daily lives that contribute to the health of the environment.
Why is it so important to protect nature?
The natural balance of Tenerife and of any place in the world depends on the diversity of its species and the health of its ecosystems. The services that nature provides us with – clean air, clean water and fertile soil – are fundamental to our survival. Protecting the world around us is not just an environmental commitment; it is a matter of ensuring our own well-being and that of future generations.
Nature is a shared responsibility
On World Nature Protection Day, we invite you to rediscover your connection with the world around you. You don’t need to be a scientist or an activist to contribute. Small gestures such as sticking to marked trails and paths, avoiding the use of single-use plastic, or simply appreciating biodiversity without disturbing it, are powerful actions. Each one of us, through our daily decisions, has the capacity to make a major difference.
At Tenerife ON, we provide you with information about the trails, natural areas and activities on the island, always with a focus on respecting and caring for the environment. Every time you set foot on a trail or stop at a viewpoint, we want you to do so with the awareness that this place is a treasure, one that deserves to be preserved.
What can you do for nature today?
Today, 18 October, we encourage you to devote some time to nature: go for a walk on one of the island’s trails, discover a spot you have never visited before, or simply plant a plant at home. Every action, however small it may seem, adds up in the great collective effort of caring for our planet.
A shared promise
Today more than ever, protecting nature is not an option, it is a necessity. At Tenerife ON we are committed to continue informing, educating and promoting the sustainable use of our island’s natural resources. We want to be by your side, accompanying you on every hike, in every adventure, and in every gesture you make towards the conservation of nature.
Because, in the end, respect for nature translates into action. And today, on World Nature Protection Day, that love for nature unites us. 🌱💚
