Partial reopening of Pico Viejo trails, while Montaña Blanca and Telesforo Bravo remain closed due to ice and snow
The Cabildo of Tenerife has published a new Resolution today reopening part of the trails of the Teide stratovolcano, while restrictions remain in place in areas most affected by winter conditions.
Following instructions from the Management of Teide National Park, the Cabildo Insular de Tenerife has issued a new Resolution signed by the Island Councillor for the Environment, Sustainability, Security and Emergencies, in order to adapt safety measures on the trails of the Teide – Pico Viejo stratovolcano due to the presence of ice and snow.
The following trails are now open to the general public:
- Trail PNT 09 (Teide – Pico Viejo – Mirador de las Narices del Teide): only the section between its junction with trail PNT 38 (Cuevas Negras) and its connection with trail PNT 12 (Mirador de Pico Viejo).
- Trail PNT 12: Mirador de Pico Viejo (entire trail).
- Trail PNT 23: Regatones Negros (entire trail).
- Trail PNT 28: Chafarí (entire trail).
The following sections remain closed to the general public for safety reasons:
- Trail PNT 07 (Montaña Blanca – La Rambleta): section between the summit of Montaña Blanca and the junction with trail PNT 11 (Mirador de La Fortaleza).
- Trail PNT 10: Telesforo Bravo (entire trail).
- Trail PNT 11: Mirador de La Fortaleza (entire trail).
Caution is advised on the rest of the park’s trail network.
Exceptions to the restrictions
Access to the closed areas is permitted for:
-
Federated mountain users with a valid membership card, registered on the Tenerife ON platform, and equipped with basic winter gear (technical clothing, crampons, and ice axe).
-
Officially registered companies or professional guides authorized to operate in Teide National Park, leading groups of up to 15 people, provided that all participants have the mandatory winter equipment and are registered on Tenerife ON.
This resolution will remain in force until trail safety conditions improve and a new official update is issued.
