A day to remember that “There is only one Mother Earth”.
Five ways to mark International Mother Earth Day, both today and throughout the year.
In 2009, the UN designated 22 April as International Mother Earth Day to raise awareness of the impacts of pollution, climate change and biodiversity loss on our survival.
And it is important to remember that our future is deeply intertwined with the future of our planet, which sustains us, houses us, and provides us with food and the air we breathe.
Our health depends on the health of our planet.
But sometimes talking about such huge and unfathomable problems can make us feel insignificant. As if our actions mean little. Right?
Well, nothing could be further from the truth. And to prove it to you, at TenerifeOn we want to share five ideas on how to take care of your planet with little effort and without leaving the island.
Five simple acts that will not only allow you to look after planet Earth today, but every day of the year, and to set an example for future generations:
- Reduce your water consumption, both at home and when using the water points in our recreational areas and campsites. Remember that water is one of the island’s most precious and scarce resources.
- Do not litter, either in our towns or in Tenerife’s natural areas. This way you will help to keep our forests and beaches free of plastics and other pollutants.
- Never light fires outside the designated areas or during wildfire season to protect Tenerife’s green lungs, our monteverde, laurel and pine forests.
- Respect the life around you – both animal and plant life. Be amazed by the beauty, colour and richness of the species, native and non-native, that make the island an ecosystem unlike any other in the world.
- Take pride in this small patch of Earth. Share walks in the shade of the trees, unforgettable views from your favourite viewpoint, the history of our people and customs.
If it sounds easy, that’s because it is. With these simple actions you are protecting our island and, with it, our Mother Earth.
Want to do more? You can always join a group of volunteers to help clean, replant or restore our natural areas.
From all of us, thank you for doing your bit. Thank you for taking a stand for the future of our shared home, today and every day of the year. 😊
