Celebrate World Forest Day with Tenerife ON
Every year on 28 June, World Forest Day gives us the opportunity to reflect on the vital importance of trees for our planet.
Trees, along with the oceans, are the lungs of our planet. They provide the oxygen we need to live and sustain biodiversity. This day is an occasion to remind ourselves of this and to be thankful for the essential role they play in our lives.
Some of the reasons why trees are such crucial elements in the conservation of our environment are explored below:
- They sequester carbon and release oxygen: Trees absorb carbon dioxide (CO2) and release oxygen, helping to mitigate climate change by curbing the greenhouse effect.
- They regulate the water cycle: Trees play a key role in regulating water cycles, preventing flooding and helping to maintain the balance of aquatic ecosystems.
- They prevent soil erosion: Tree roots stabilise the soil, preventing erosion and creating favourable conditions for sustainable agriculture.
- They are habitats for biodiversity: Forests are home to a multitude of plants, animals and microorganisms and thus help to preserve biodiversity.
- They provide natural resources: Trees are an invaluable source of food, medicines, wood, paper and other natural products.
Every country celebrates this date with various activities focused on the conservation and regeneration of our forests. Activities include tree planting, forest clean-ups and educational workshops on the care and protection of trees.
This year, we at Tenerife ON invite you to celebrate World Forest Day by visiting some of the most iconic trees on our island. Here are some suggestions:
- Ancient viñátigo trees on the PR TF 25.4 Lomo de La Jara loop trail.
- Pino Gordo and Pino de las dos Pernadas pine trees on the PR TF 72 Vilaflor - Lunar Landscape - Vilaflor.
- “Hijas Cambadas” (Prunus lusitanica) on the trail that bears the same name.
Not only will you be able to see these majestic trees up close, but you will also learn how important it is to conserve them.
Commemorate World Forest Day by joining us in protecting our forests from deforestation and other threats. Your participation is critical to ensuring a sustainable future for our island and the planet.
On behalf of the environment and Tenerife ON, thank you! 🙏
