The Cañada Blanca Visitor Centre is now powered by solar energy
With 108 solar panels, 4 inverters and a battery system, the centre has been disconnected from the generator that used to supply power to it.
The Cañada Blanca Visitor Centre in the Teide National Park was inaugurated in June 2022 after being closed for 15 years.
Due to its location, this centre is isolated from the grid, so in the past it needed to be supplied by a 300 kVA generator set.
After its reopening, this power system will only be used in exceptional or emergency situations thanks to a hybrid photovoltaic system consisting of 108 solar panels, 4 inverters and a battery system.
The system is configured in such a way that the centre supplies itself with renewable energy and at the same time recharges the batteries to benefit from all the surplus energy when required. This enables the centre to be highly self-sufficient in energy consumption.
A shade assessment was carried out on the roofs chosen for the solar PV system to ensure the minimum hours of electricity generation required on the less sunny days of the year.
Thanks to this new source of renewable energy, the Cañada Blanca Visitor Centre reopened its doors to the public in June 2022 to offer visitors an exhibition tracing the presence of humans on the summits of Tenerife throughout history.
If you have not already been, Tenerife ON encourages you to pay it a visit. You will find it in the building adjoining the Parador de Las Cañadas del Teide, in a prime location in the heart of the Teide National Park and very close to the iconic Roques de García landmark.
