New resolution on canyoning in Tenerife
The Island Council of Tenerife has introduced a general authorisation for canyoning in designated canyons within the island’s Protected Natural Areas
This measure is in line with Decree 111/2002, which delegates the management and conservation of protected natural areas to the Island Councils, and its main objective is to simplify administrative procedures and facilitate access to this activity in certain natural areas of Tenerife.
The resolution thus encourages a more accessible and responsible approach to canyoning.
Conditions for general authorisation
Under this authorisation, legal entities, active tourism companies and even individuals may carry out canyoning activities in designated ravines, provided that they meet certain conditions:
For example, the resolution clearly stipulates an obligation to respect and protect the environment during the activity, avoiding noise, littering or any other action that may alter the natural balance of the surroundings.
In the case of groups, these may not exceed the maximum limit of 20 participants. And although it is no longer necessary for all members to have a climbing federation membership card, the organiser or guide must carry their accreditation document, in addition to first having obtained the informed consent of the participants in writing.
It is also important to note that this authorisation does not exempt the organisers or participants from obtaining landowner permissions in the event that the activity takes place on private land.
Ravines covered by this authorisation
The resolution establishes the following categories for canyoning:
- Ravines that do not require any authorisation.
- Ravines for which authorisation is required.
- Ravines for which canyoning is not authorised.
This resolution will be in force until 31 December 2024, subject to revision or extension, and will be published in the Official Gazette of the Province.
